A 19-YEAR-OLD man handed himself in to police and confessed to two sex attacks, a court was told.
Bryn Waughington appeared before magistrates yesterday when he pleaded guilty to two sexual assaults against women in Wellingborough on January 28 and February 12, this year.
During the hearing at Corby Magistrates Court he sat with his head bowed as Sally Laundon, prosecuting, described the attacks which sparked extra police patrols in Wellingborough and left women in the town in fear.
She said the first incident took place in London Road, in the town, after the victim saw a man who began walking faster behind her, before sexually assaulting her.
Mrs Laundon said: “She fell down and was so distressed she ran into the road. She was shocked and frightened.”
The court was told that the second attack happened in Elsden Road, Wellingborough, at 5.30am on February 12, when the victim was walking to work. She too was grabbed from behind and assaulted, the court was told.
Mrs Laundon said: “That victim was able to give a good description and the defendant was arrested on March 23.
“He denied the attacks and was bailed pending further inquiries.
“At the time police put on extra local patrols.”
John Whiston, in mitigation, said Waughington, from Wellingborough, walked into the town’s police station on Thursday and confessed to the assaults.
He said: “He accepted responsibility for his actions. He is ashamed and can’t understand why he finds himself in this position. He understands that they are serious matters.”
The case was adjourned until Tuesday, June 12, at Wellingborough Magistrates Court, for probation and pyschiatric reports to be prepared.
Waughington, who wore jeans and a tracksuit top, was granted bail on condition he lives at an address in Derby, reports daily to the police and wears an electronic tag during a 6pm to 6am curfew.
