Money from the Big Lottery Fund will help a day centre continue reaching out and helping members in the community.

Pravasi Mandal Day Centre in Wellingborough has a new minibus thanks to £10,000 awarded to them by the Big Lottery.

It means they can provide transport to and from the centre in Elsden Road in the town.

Dipak Patel, secretary for Pravasi Mandal Day Centre on receiving the keys for the new minibus, said: “I am delighted that the new vehicle will allow users at the Pravasi Mandal to carry on being able to make use of local facilities and bring a greater degree of independence to their everyday lives.”

The day centre was set up in 1984 by a group of men who wanted to meet on a regular basis for companionship.

It has since gone on to become a much larger organisation committed to providing day care to Asian elderly people within the community.

The registered charity arranges transport as well as offering a variety of activities for members.

Special outings, social events, shopping and day trips are enjoyed throughout the year.

Pravin Patel from the centre said: “The grant awarded by the Big Lottery Fund is incredible and will allow us to take steps forward and do everything we can to make the lives of local people as good as they can be.

“We are delighted with the Lottery grant to enable us to buy a new minibus for our day centre for the elderly.

“We will now be able to provide reliable transport for those who come to the day centre to meet people in a warm friendly environment.

“We are all extremely grateful to the Big Lottery Fund.

“These awards will make a real difference to the lives of local people.”

The overall aim of Pravasi Mandal is to promote, advocate and cater for the social, cultural, recreational, physical and support needs of older persons of Asian origin who are isolated, disabled or have other difficulties.

Services offered by the centre include fitness classes, yoga, Tai Chi and swimming.

There is also the chance to play indoor games and get involved with gardening activities.
