The owners of a Kettering shop which was badly damaged by thieves during an attempted cash machine raid on Monday morning say the store is likely to be completely rebuilt.

Police were called to Budgens, in St Stephens Road, at about 4am on Monday after a digger-type vehicle had been used to smash through the wall of the shop in an attempt to steal the cash machine.

The thieves made their escape after causing extensive damage to the building.

A spokesman for Budgens today said: “This was a terrible incident and our initial investigations show there is considerable structural damage.

“The store will probably need a total rebuild and will unfortunately be closed for some time.

“The area is now safe and we have security on site to protect the shop and the public. We want to thank everyone in the local community for their support and we are working with the retailer to re-open the store as soon as we can.”

Anyone with information about the raid is asked to phone Northamptonshire Police on 101. Alternatively, phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
