Nominations are being sought for an annual awards event which aims to recognise our area’s sporting heroes.

The awards bash takes place at Wicksteed Park on October 23, but people are being asked to send in nominations early.

There are a total of 13 categories to choose from: Leader of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Sport School of the Year, Long-time Contribution to Sport, Team of the Year, Community Club of the Year, Coach of the Year, Get Active Award, Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year, Young Sportsman, Young Sportswoman and Local Sportsperson.

The 13th category is the Arthur Nicholson Sports Personality of the Year Trophy, which is decided by public vote between September 26 and October 20. To qualify for the award individuals must have been nominated for one of the sports categories.

Jenna Bartley, community services officer at Kettering Council, said: “Last year’s sports awards was the most successful yet.

“About 200 people attended on the awards evening and we had something like a record 80 nominations.

“We are hoping this year’s is even bigger.”

The awards are judged on sporting achievements between August 2013 and August this year.

The deadline is at midnight on September 14.

To nominate someone, either fill in the online form, or download a form which can be printed and posted, at www.kettering.gov.uk or contact Jenna Bartley on 01536 534284 who can send out a nomination form.

Last year’s sports personality award winner was youngster Robert Taylor, who won for his achievements in racing.
