Kettering mezzo-soprano Faryl Smith will be taking centre stage at Wembley as the football season kicks off at the weekend.

Faryl, who shot to fame during the 2008 series of Britain’s Got Talent, has been invited by the Football Association to sing the National Anthem before Sunday’s Community Shield match between Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Community Shield, which will be broadcast live on BT Sport on Sunday, August 3, is the English football season’s traditional curtain-raiser.

Faryl, who turned 20 earlier this month, is no stranger to Wembley, singing before the start of the FA Cup finals there in 2009 and 2010, and again earlier this year at the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final between Bristol City and Walsall.

Her parents Linda and Tony said: “This is obviously an honour for Faryl to perform at Wembley again.”

Later this year Faryl will begin studying at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, one of the world’s leading conservatoires and drama schools.
