The pitch which helped Northampton win the Premiership and Challenge Cup titles is to be relaid in Kettering.

The move has been organised by Blues chairman – and ex-Saints player – Lennie Newman, his counterpart at the Saints Tony Hewitt and the two clubs’ groundsmen.

Mr Newman said: “They offered it to us for nothing, so long as we could transfer it from Franklin’s Gardens to Waverley Road.

“We are very proud of our playing surface anyway but now we will have effectively the same pitch as Franklin’s Gardens.”

The 600 tonnes of turf will be used the season after next – it cannot be relaid at Waverley Road for up to eight months.
