Kettering Council could tonight (Wednesday) decide to host the final stage of the 2016 Aviva Women’s Tour professional cycling race after being offered the opportunity by Northamptonshire County Council.

Stages of the race have been held in the county for the past two years with Kettering hosting the close of stage three earlier this year in June, but never before has it hosted the event’s climax.

The county council has asked Kettering to pay £40,000 towards the cost of the stage, which would be held on a Sunday, representing one third of the overall stage costs.

In a report set to be discussed at tonight’s executive committee meeting, opportunities and challenges of the plans have been outlined.

It is suggested that acceptance of the request from the county council will attract new visitors to the town increasing tourism, increase media coverage and make the event management easier.

However, also outlined is the suggestion of increased costs, difficulties in attracting volunteers and a lack of open shops.

Kettering Council will either accept the offer, defer a decision, decide in principle to accept subject to financial settlement, or reject the offer.
