Kettering will be one of the finishing lines for next year’s Women’s Tour cycling event next June – providing the council can raise enough cash through sponsorship to fund the event.
Northamptonshire hosted one of the stages of last year’s cycling event, which was the first of its kind.
The organisers, SweetSpot Group, approached Kettering Council to see whether the town was interested in becoming the venue for one of the finishing lines in the 2015 event.
The council’s executive committee discussed the proposal at a meeting earlier this month.
Deputy chief executive Martin Hammond said the event was expected to cost about £50,000, but about half of that would be mitigated by sponsorship.
Northampton hosted one of the finishing lines for last year’s event and raised £30,000 in sponsorship, mostly from Carlsberg and the University of Northampton.
Councillors agreed to fund the event, adding that the maximum contribution from the authority would be £22,500, with the remainder being met by sponsorship.
