The seaside is being brought back to a town centre this weekend in a popular event which organisers promise will be bigger than ever.

Kettering by the Sea returns on Saturday, July 20, for four weeks of sun, sea and sand in the town centre, as well as an itinerary packed with a host of other activities.

Taking place in the Market Place in Kettering, a giant sandpit and splash fountains will help people young and old get into the summer spirit.

There is also a programme of activities and entertainment to coincide with the sandy spectacular.

Events include performances of Punch and Judy, theatre shows and arts and crafts stalls.

There will be interactive experiments provided by London’s Science Museum on August 15 and 16, visits from animals from West Lodge Farm and Zumba among a range of activities and attractions on offer.

Meanwhile a fashion show and urban beach volleyball will be held on Saturday, August 3.

Kettering by the Sea is open from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm.

The only Sunday in which the beach will be open will be on August 18, which also marks the last day of the festivities.

Kettering Council revealed more than 5,000 people joined in the four weeks of activities last year.

But organisers have said there is even more on offer for fun-seekers in Kettering this summer.

Head of community services at Kettering Council Valerie Hitchman said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the summer celebration is returning to Kettering this year and is bigger and better than ever.

“The wide range of free activities taking place ensures that there’s something for everyone.

“We look forward to seeing you on the Market Place this summer.”

Cllr Jan Smith, the portfolio holder for community and culture, said she was eagerly anticipating the summer entertainment.

She added: “It’s fantastic that we are able to offer such a full programme of free activities for children and young adults during the summer holidays.

“With four weeks of entertainment to choose from, Kettering’s Market Place is well worth a visit.”
