The final preparations are being made for a town’s first ever urban beach volleyball contest later this week.

Kettering Council and Kettering Volleyball Club will be holding the town’s first ever Urban Beach Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, July, 28, at the Market Place.

The tournament will take place in the sandpit used for Kettering by the Sea, and nets were put up yesterday so players and locals could practice before the big day.

Head of community services Valerie Hitchman said: “Kettering is the home of volleyball and the Urban Beach Volleyball tournament being held on Kettering’s award winning market place makes it very unique tournament.

“This year is a very important year for sport and we hope the tournament will be a catalyst to more people taking up more sport this summer.”

On Saturday, an opening ceremony will be performed by the Kettering Cheerleading Academy at 10am.

This will be followed by a junior school tournament at 10.30, with medals and presentations at three hours later.

Then, a tournament featuring youth clubs and cadets will get underway at 2pm, with winners presented with their medals at 5pm.

A final tournament will take place from 5.15pm with the presentations at 8.30pm.

Local band Matt Roberts and the Finer Things will be playing live from 5pm to 7pm.

Councillor Jonathan Bullock, portfolio holder for community and culture, said:“This will be the first time the Urban Beach Volleyball Tournament has been held in Kettering and with so many schools, clubs and organisations taking part it promises to be an action packed day.”

Food and refreshments will be provided by local coffee retailer Java Java throughout the day and people will be able to play Olympics games on Nintendo Wiis in the Parish Rooms or pick up some information on the local sports clubs in the borough.
