CHRISTY John George 2nd Lieutenant, 1st/2nd Battalion attached 1st/5th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action, hit by a shell splinter while reconnoitering an enemy’s stronghold, at Magny La Fosse 3rd October 1918. Eldest son of Mr and Mrs J Christy, 8, William Street, Kettering and a nephew of Mr Frank Wright. Husband of Mrs Christy of “Collingwood House”, Kettering. Buried in BUSIGNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Nord, France. Plot V Row C Grave 8.

In remembrance of John David Wright 1839-1909 and of Martha his wife 1843-1919 who for many years were devoted members of this Church and Congregation, this tablet was placed here by their family as a token of gratitude for the safe return of their sons (grandsons of the above) from the Great War 19 14-1919, 15 of whom served in His Majesty’s Forces, one only, Second Lieutenant J. G. Christy, falling in action at Magny La Fosse, October 3rd, 1918.

Mrs. J G Christy of “Collingwood House”, Kettering, has received official news that her husband Second Lieut. John George Christy of the Leicestershire Regiment was killed in action on October 3rd. Lieut. Christy was the elder son of Mr and Mrs J Christy, 8, William Street and a nephew of Mr Frank Wright. The bereaved wife has received the following letters.

Oct 5th 1918

“Dear Mrs Christy - I very much regret to tell you that your husband was killed in action on the 3rd and was buried by me to-day in a little village cemetery just behind the Hindenburg Line which your husband and his division so bravely and wonderfully stormed on Sunday last. It will be a little comfort to know that his end came very suddenly and painlessly being hit by a sniper. His padre the Rev C W Buck was killed on Sunday and is buried by the side of your husband. I need not say that your husband’s memory is very precious to the battalion. With deepest sympathy I remain yours very sincerely”

Howard W Turton

Wesleyan Chaplain Brigade.

Leicestershire Regiment

Oct 5th 1918

“Dear Mrs Christy - It is with deep regret that I have to write and tell you of the death of your husband Second-Lieut. J.G. Christy. He was killed in action on October 3rd being hit by a shell splinter while reconnoitering an enemy’s stronghold which his company was going to attack. He died at once and felt no pain. You have no doubt read in the paper of the doings of this division and though the battle in which your husband met his death was four days later it was none the less a fight in which we did just as well and gained as much credit. So many of the officers have lost their lives in this war for apparently no good results. In the case of your husband it is different. We were in the middle of a successful battle and he was struck down leading his men, and to my mind there can be no nobler death.

What we have always admired so much in your husband was the marvellous way in which he ?????? himself to conditions which must have been hateful to him. His should not have been a soldiers life and all the horrors and grimness of war must have been even more repulsive to him than to many of us. Yet he never shirked a duty, never ‘begged off’ a ?????? no matter the hardship, the discomfort or the danger, he was always ready for it. More than once his work on patrol received the commendation of the Major-General for his daring. His loss will be keenly felt by all of us. Words of sympathy are empty things, but it is no exaggeration to say that every officer and man in the Regiment sympathises most sincerely with you in this great loss. I only hope that you have the strength to bear it with the courage and fortitude that your husband showed out here. ????????? yours very sincerely”

DUCKETT Ernest Henry Private G/25895, 10th Battalion, Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Killed in action 29th September 1918. Aged 19. Born Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, enlisted and resident Kettering. Son of John W and Mary Violet Duckett, of 47, Bayes St, Kettering. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 14 to 17 and 162 to 162A.

Ernest Duckett played the side drum in the Kettering Salvation band. He was born in Stapleford but he and his parents moved to Kettering, living at 47 Bayes Street. He worked just up the street at the Kettering Co-op Clothing Factory. In May 1917 he joined the West Surrey Regiment and went to France in May 1918. He was killed, by a shell, during an advance on the night of 29th-30th September 1918 two months before the end of the war. He has no known grave and his name in on the Tyne Cot memorial on Passchendaele Ridge.

The following report is taken from the Kettering Leader.

“The regrettable news has been received that Pte Ernest Henry Duckett, only son of Mr and Mrs Duckett, 47, Bayes Street, Kettering, has been killed in action in France. The young man, who was only 19 years of age, enlisted in May 1917, in the West Surrey Regt. and went to France in March of the present year. He was previously employed at the Kettering Cooperative Clothing Factory in Field Street, and was prominently associated with the Salvation Army, and used to play side drum in the band. His many friends in Kettering will learn of his loss with great regret. The lieutenant of his company, Lieut F. E.B. Girling, writes that “the young man was killed during the advance on the night of Sept. 29th—30th, 1918. He was killed instantaneously by a shell, and did not suffer at all. He was a good soldier, and died whilst doing his duty with a cheerful heart. They were indeed sorry to lose him. His body was taken to the rear and properly buried.”

KENDALL Herbert Charles Herbert was born 11th December 1883 at 10 School Lane in Kettering, Northamptonshire. His father, George Thomas Clarke Kendall was a Shoe Presser and his mother was Martha Annie Kendall (formerly ‘Roughton’).

In 1901 his family were living in The Woolpack Inn, Kettering. His father was the 45 year old Publican and his mother was 40 years old His 4 brothers were Harry Norton (18), John Roughton (15), Ernest George (13), and William Thomas (1). Alice Roughton also lived there, being listed as a 20 year old ‘Domestic Servant’.

Herbert became a ‘Stonemason Journeyman’, moved to Heath and Reach, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire and married Ellen Elizabeth Hack (also from Heath and Reach) on 11th September 1909. Between 1910 and 1915, they had 4 children; Annie Elizabeth, Hilda Georgina, Herbert George and Evelyn. Herbert enjoyed performing ‘Light Opera’, notably Gilbert and Sullivan, and travelled considerably with his family according to his work.

In August 1914 (aged 30) he enlisted into the British Army. After training, he was assigned to 1st/5th Battalion (TF) The Bedfordshire Regiment and went to The Balkan’s, landing at Suvla Bay in Gallipoli on the 10th August 1915. He took part in the 15th August attack on ‘Kidney Hill’ (along the Kiretch Tepe Ridge) and other smaller actions before a stomach wound in October and a subsequent operation in No. 5 Canadian Stationary Hospital, Egypt returned him to England.

He recovered and returned to the 7th Bedfordshire’s in France sometime during the Summer of 1916. The 7th were part of the 54th Brigade, 18th (Eastern) Division, which including the 6th Northampton’s and 11th Royal Fusiliers. In addition to the ‘normal routines’ of training, fatigues and holding the trenches, they were involved in major engagement during July and September 1916, February, March, May, August and November 1917 and March 1918.

On the 21st March 1918, the German Army launched a massive offensive called ‘Operation Michael’ which opened with a devastating artillery and gas barrage at 4.30am. The Battalion were in Divisional Reserve initially, but by the 23rd they had endured 2 difficult days of fighting, as the British 3rd and 5th Armies were hit hard. The 54th Brigade recorded only 14 officers and 425 men that night surviving from its original strength of around 2,500.

Herbert was Killed in Action on Saturday 23rd March 1918, near St Quentin in France. He was 34 years old and left a wife and 4 children. He has no known grave but is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial to the Missing and the Kettering Memorial.

RICE William Ewart Private 6928, 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action 22nd January 1915. Born St Andrew’s, Kettering, enlisted Northampton. Son of Arthur and Emma Rice, of 46, Edmund St, Kettering. No known grave. Commemorated on LE TOURET MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 28 to 30.

From a local newspaper 27th February 1915

“Dad, don’t worry about me” were among the last words contained in a letter written to his father by Pte William Ewart Rice, of the 2nd Northampton’s. “I am feeling A1” he continued, “except my feet, which are slightly frost-bitten, but we shall get through all right and give them a good whacking.” Unhappily for Pte Rice his prophecy has lacked personal fulfilment, for he is reported killed in action. Pte Rice lived for many years in Northampton. He went to South Africa with his Regiment after the Boer War, and was among the first to be called up when hostilities broke out last August. He was a baker and confectioner by trade, and was the eldest son of Mr Arthur Rice, who now resides at 16, Edmund Street, Kettering. Deceased’s brother George belongs to the 1st Batt. Lancashire Fusiliers, and is now serving as military telegraphist and wireless operator.

Sidney Wells lived at 63 Ford Street. He went to school at what was then called Stamford Road Council School and he worked in Frank Wright’s factory in Carey Street. Every Sunday he would have walked up to Field Street where he was a young people’s worker in the Sunday school. That was his world until in 1916 he finds himself in France, fighting in the battle of the Somme. On 12th October 1916, during the Battle of Transloy Ridge he was killed aged 19. He has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Thiepval Memorial.

The following report is taken from The Kettering Leader.

“We are deeply sorry to have to report that Mr and Mrs S Wells of 63, Ford Street, Kettering, have received the regrettable news that their son, Pte Sidney Wells of the Norfolk Regiment, was killed in action on October 12th, 1916

Pte Wells enlisted in January of the present year in the Norfolk Regiment; and was later transferred to another battalion of the same Regiment. Prior to joining the forces he was in the service of Messrs F Wright and Co, of Carey Street, where had been since he left school. He received his education at the Stamford Road Council School, and was an ardent member of the Kettering Corps of the Salvation Army, and is the first member of that organization in Kettering to give his life for his Country’s sake. The respect and esteem in which Private Wells was universally held was evidenced on Sunday evening at a memorial service at the Salvation Army Barracks, in field Street. Much sympathy is being expressed with Mr and Mrs Wells in their irreparable loss.”
