Figures show the number of police officers and PCSOs with second jobs has increased by 50 per cent since last year.
The figures were revealed after Northamptonshire Police responded to a Freedom of Information request.
Leonie Tromans, chairman of the force’s Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, said she believed pressures on personal budgets were to blame for the increase.
She said: “You can only think it’s due to the current austerity measures.
“There will be more officers thinking ‘I need to bridge the gap’.”
Ms Tromans said officers were allowed to take a second job if approved by the chief constable.
