Relatives of a soldier from Kettering who is currently serving in Afghanistan are appealing for people to donate sweets and other non-perishables to send to those serving abroad.

Sara Simms and Emma Michael, who are the aunt and cousin of Lance Corporal David Simms, have set up Treats for Troops to help those soldiers who do not often receive packages from home.

Sara said: “My nephew David is out in Afghanistan at the moment and I tend to send him sweets and things.

“He said he would pass them on to the lads who don’t get parcels.

“He said there are quite a few of his friends who don’t get them.”

Sara and Emma have persuaded the Morrison’s store in Kettering to help, and people wanting to donate can leave their items at a drop-off point at the Lower Street store.

Sara added: “We thought, ‘Why not ask around and see if anyone else wants to donate, to see if any of the supermarkets wanted to donate?’.”

They are also looking for donations of padded A4-sized envelopes and other items needed to send the treats off to the service personnel.
