A thief wearing a distinctive hat stole a teenage girl’s mobile phone after claiming he needed to borrow it to call his mum.

The man, who was wearing a black woolly hat with the word ‘geek’ written on it, approached two girls as they were walking along Gainsborough Road in Corby at about 10.50pm on Friday, April 11.

He asked the girls the time, then asked to borrow one of their phones so he could ring his mum.

While making the call, he ran away with the phone towards Leighton Road.

He was mixed race, between 17 and 20, about 5ft 9in and of medium build.

He had big ears and a tattoo ‘sleeve’ on his right arm which featured roses or stars.

As well as his woolly hat, he was wearing a grey hooded top, brown chino trousers and black trainers.
