The country’s female volleyball team stopped in Kettering this week to train at a town sports centre.

The Women’s GB volleyball team arrived in Kettering this week to train at the National Volleyball Centre, based at Kettering Conference Centre, in Thurston Drive, on Tuesday.

The team had a two day training schedule which included use of the courts in the impressive sports arena part of Arena Sports facilities, the gym and pool at at the facility.

GB Volleyball olympian Maria Bertelli said: “We met the local Kettering Volleyball Club while we have been here which was great.

“We hope that the Olympics has raised the profile of volleyball in the UK and we can only see the sport going from strength to strength and more people get involved.

“This venue is ideal for us. Not only is it centrally located and easy to get to but we can meet, eat, sleep and play all under the one roof.”

Christine Murphy, marketing director for the venue, said “We are proud to be the home of volleyball in England and look forward to the people of Kettering and Northamptonshire using the fantastic sports facilities here even more now they have been inspired by the Olympics.

“As well as the arena, our new beach volleyball courts have created a lot interest with local people playing for fun and talking about setting up their own friendly leagues and tournaments.”
