Dozens of people in Raunds took to the streets to catch a glimpse of a colourful procession as part of the town’s carnival.

Raunds carnival was blessed with dazzling sunshine on Saturday as six floats plus scores of performers assembled at the town’s football club before embarking on a tour through the area and finishing at the Amos Lawrence Park which was littered with other festivities for families to enjoy.

Among the entries in this year’s procession were the 1st and 2nd Raunds Scout Groups, the town’s Brownies, and the George and Dragon pub, with the theme being heroes and villains.

The variety of entries included Olympic heroes, best of British, Dr Who themes and witches.

Maureen Carroll, who is on the carnival’s organising committee, said: “It’s an event that really brings the community together and this year we’re bigger than ever.

“We started work on planning the carnival the day after last year’s one so it’s such a relief to see it all come together.

“We’ve got some brilliant entries in the procession this year and we’re hoping to see thousands of people down in the park at the carnival.”

It is the town’s third carnival in a row, after returning by popular demand in 2010 after an absence of nearly two decades.

The procession left the football club at midday, before getting to the field an hour later.

The park was littered with fairground rides, stalls, and family fun, while youngsters took part in a skating and BMX competition.

Arena events included the Nene Valley Dance Academy performing for the crowd, dog agility shows, and live music.

Queens from the area’s summer carnivals were also invited to Raunds to take part in the festivities as well as the crowning of one of them as the Queen of Queens.

James Walker, from 1st Raunds Scout Group, said: “All the children are really excited and we’ve got about 40 of them on our float. Our theme is Olympic heroes.

“After the success of the Olympics this year, we had to go with that theme.

“All of the youngsters have worked hard on their costumes and their displays and the float looks really good.”
