Former imam of town mosque jailed

The former imam of Wellingborough mosque has been jailed for sexually abusing two girls while teaching the Koran.

Abdul Matin, 41, was found unanimously guilty of seven sexual assault charges at Northampton Crown Court in July.

The imam, who resigned last year, was accused of sexually assaulting two girls, who cannot be identified, during religious lessons.

At Derby Crown Court this week, he was jailed for 12 months and put on the sex offenders’ register for the next five years.

He was given a sexual offences’ prevention order and disqualified from working with children for 10 years.
