Judges have announced the shortlist of 12 finalists for this year’s Film Northants.

The short film festival, which is now in its fifth year, received a wide range of entries from film-makers of all levels from across the county, who are competing to win a place at the red carpet awards ceremony at Cineworld, Northampton, on September 17.

The screening will feature six shortlisted films from the under-16s category and six films from the over-16s category.

Winners of each category will be announced on the night and will receive prizes including a day’s use of a professional film studio and a selection of movie merchandise.

There will also be a Judges’ Choice Award and, for this year only, a special Fifth Anniversary Award, for films which chose to include the theme of five, to celebrate the festival’s birthday.

The shortlisted films include Laffin Gas made by Leigh Lewis, Joshua Brown, Toni Lattaway, Chris Sharrock of Rushden, Bottles from The Rest, of Northampton, Accidentally in Daventry, shot by youngsters in Daventry, The Book made in Corby, and Save the Rainforest made by pupils of Wellingborough School.

This year’s guest judge and former Film Northants winner, Dean Twaites, of media production company Timecode Pro, said: “The standard has got better and better every year and this year is no exception.

“This year has a mixture of genres - humour, to the darker and emotional films.

“It has been great for me to be involved on the other side of the competition and I can’t wait to see how it progresses.”

International film critic Bruce Green, who is also a Film Northants’ judge, said: “Compared with previous years this year’s entries have been far more inventive and featured much broader types of genre - onwards and upwards.” Eve Myhill, from Northampton-based video production firm Gnu Films Ltd, who is also on the Film Northants judging panel, said: “I think there has been a great selection of films showcasing a great range of narratives and formats.

“It’s wonderful to see such talent emerging.”

Judges decide the winner and runner-up of the under-16s category - but you can help to choose the winner of the over-16s category by taking part in a public vote which opens today (Monday, August 13).
