Kettering’s teen singing sensation Faryl Smith took the stage at a star-studded event last month to help celebrate the life of football legend Sir Bobby Robson.
A charity evening in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Trust was held at the Sage in Gateshead to celebrate what would have been the 80th birthday of the former Newcastle and Barcelona manager, who died in July 2009.
Faryl, 17, rose to fame on the ITV hit show Britain’s Got Talent in 2008. Sir Bobby was said to have been a big fan of hers and had arranged for her to be involved in a concert comprising all the musicians he enjoyed in his lifetime, but he passed away a fortnight before the event was due to happen.
With opera singer Russell Watson, Faryl sang an emotional rendition of Barcelona, the song made famous by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé, and I Dreamed a Dream – two of Sir Bobby’s favourite songs.
Faryl’s dad Tony Smith said: “It was an emotional but fantastic evening.”
