An awards ceremony “churned” out nicely for a county dairy farm after it took the spoils at the Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards.

Gerald Bailey, owner of Newlands Farm, Hannington, was named as Local Food Hero of the year and he says he was delighted to win the award.

He said: “I’m delighted, not just for me but the whole farm.

“I set the wheels in motion, but without good men and loyal workers we can’t do it.”

Mr Bailey could not make the awards dinner, which was held at The Wing, Silverstone, on November 14, as he was away in Ireland at the time.

However, he said it makes them more determined to win again next year and actually make it to the ceremony in person.

Mr Bailey added: “It is great going really.

“We will have to try extra hard to win next year. I don’t think we’ll do it but we’ll try.”

Mr Bailey thinks he won the award for his customer service as he believes the customer is always right, adding that he is happy to jump into his car and speak to the customer if it helps.

The owner of The Stag’s Head pub, in Great Doddington, said she was delighted after they finished second in the Carlsberg Northampton rural community pub of the year category.

Geraldine Rendle said: “I am really pleased that we were nominated and came second.”

She added that the pub would try hard to win next year as it would be something nice to do.

The trophies at the dinner were presented by a selection of this year’s award judges, including editor and food writer William Sitwell, TV chef Sophie Grigson, and Steven Saunders, from Aspire Hospitality who has worked on the television programme Ready Steady Cook.

The competition was organised by the Northampton Enterprise Partnership (NEP) and is now in its fourth year.

Chairman of NEP Paul Southworth thanked everyone for their support and said: “Northamptonshire should quite rightly feel mightily proud of its many nationally-recognised producers, venues and chefs being celebrated tonight.”

The Carlsberg Northamptonshire Food and Drinks Awards 2012/2013 dinner was sponsored by Electrolux.
