Family Days Out: On a budget

Have your say

School holidays can be an expensive business when it comes to keeping kids entertained.

So if you’re starting to feel the pinch, here are some great things to do at discounted prices.

Bowling

If you fancy doing something a bit more active with the kids, try your hand at ten-pin bowling in Kettering.

You can get a game of bowling with chips and a soft drink at The New York Thunderbowl, Kettering, for £8 for two, £14 for four or £18 for six people.

This offer is available via Groupon and expires on September 30, 2014. Valid Sunday to Thursday 10am to 10pm and Friday to Saturday 10am to 6pm.

It’s a great bargain as one game for a family of four (without fries or drinks) normally costs £18.

There is a great atmosphere here with music being played while you play to help keep you entertained.

If you’ve got younger children, you can ask for the sides of your lane to be lifted up (making it easier for the kids’ ball to hit the pins rather than disappearing down the sides!).

You can also opt to use the metal frame which is available on each lane.

Basically, it’s a handy framework for young children to use to help control the ball.

They pop the ball on top and give it a little push to roll it down the lane.

Also, plan about an hour for your game.

Swim and watch a film

The Core at Corby is offering a special priced cinema ticket price of just £3.50 when you present your swimming receipt from Corby East Midlands International Swimming Pool to the ticket office at The Core.

A perfect day indoors if the weather is not great!

Visit www.thecorecorby.com or call 01536 470470 for details of films showing.

Prices for swimming start from £3.50 for adults and £1.90 for children. Under fives are free.

You’ll also need an extra £1 to pay for a locker (but don’t worry, you’ll get this back when you hand in your swim wristband given at the time of paying).

And if you have a pushchair there is ample space in the buggy park just to the left as you enter the building (again, a £1 coin is needed to store it securely).

There’s also an onsite café with plenty on offer ranging from breakfasts, snacks, burgers and sweet treats along with hot and cold drinks!

Find out times for swimming sessions by visiting www.corby.gov.uk/corbypool.

Soft play area

Take your little pirates on an adventure at Paul’s Pirates in Wellingborough (NN8 6GR).

It’s a pirate-themed indoor adventure for children aged 11 and under, complete with slides, ball pool, stepping stones and rope bridge.

Save money and buy your entrance using Groupon and you can save up to 62 per cent.

Either pay £3.50 for two children, £5.50 for three children or £6.50 for four children.

Vouchers need to be used 30 days after purchase. But hurry, there’s limited time left on this offer!

The Canal Museum

Get entry for two for £5.50 or £7 for a family of four to the Canal Museum in Stoke Bruerne, saving up to 47 per cent when booking via Groupon.

The museum showcases the story of Britain’s canals and houses displays of a selection of canal crafts.

Groupon vouchers are valid Monday to Sunday 10am to 5pm and no booking is needed – just present your printed voucher when you arrive!

You can find them using the postcode NN12 7SE.

Odeon Kids Club

If your kids are smitten with the film Frozen and are always singing the songs from the film, then you might want to head to Odeon Kettering and watch Frozen Sing-a-long!

It’s on from 10.30am every day for the next week and is part of Odeon Kids Club where the featured film is just £3 each – whether you’re an adult or a child.

It’s great value for what can often be an expensive treat for the family.
