A bank holiday weekend activity to promote volleyball for children and adults alike is taking place in Kettering on Saturday.

The event, at the Sports Arena in Thurston Drive, which is also the National Volleyball Centre, is part of the Go Spike Big Weekend.

The event will run between 10am and 4pm on Saturday and will include a BBQ, music, qualified coaching and a fun tournament. More information is available by calling 01536 520130.

Sport England figures suggest more than 2,300 people in Northamptonshire currently play volleyball, with nearly 600 wanting to take the sport up.

Zara Dampney, who represented Team GB beach volleyball at London 2012, said: “I’m incredibly excited about the Go Spike Big Weekend and think it will be a fantastic showcase of everything volleyball has to offer.

“Everyone from kids to retired people should experience the enjoyment and the health benefits of volleyball.”

“People don’t realise just how accessible volleyball is – there are facilities for all versions of the sport right across the country, and I hope that once people give it a go they will join up and make volleyball a regular part of their lives and enjoy it just as much as I do.”
