Homes are needed for about 80 ex-battery hens which are currently being cared for by a charity.

Animals In Need in Little Irchester took in more than 100 hens before Christmas and still has about 80 which need new owners. It rehomes hens in at least groups of three.

Charity spokesman Roy Marriott said: “We’ve rehomed about 15 since New Year. We won’t rehome them by themselves and prefer to rehome them in groups of three so if one dies a hen will not be left by themselves. Prospective owners need to have a secure coop with a reasonable run and access to a garden so the hens have somewhere to scratch around.”

The charity charges £5 a hen and carries out a home visit before it rehomes the birds. For details call 01933 278080.
