Corby town centre has been recognised for its environmental efforts.

Managing agents Ashdown Phillips has been awarded a Shining Star of the Year award in the National Recycling Stars Awards for 2011.

Staff at the shopping centre sent no waste to landfill last year due to their recycling initiatives. A total of 134 tonnes of cardboard and 13 tonnes of plastics produced by the shops and retail outlets were recycled last year. The general waste was taken to a plant which extracts energy from waste.

Operations manager Steve Tysoe said: “If you work at it, there are many advantages, and not just financial. It makes you and the staff feel good that something is being done for the environment.”

The firm also employs adults with learning difficulties as part of its Every Can Counts aluminium recycling.

Centre director Dan Pickard said: “I’m really proud of what the team has achieved. It not only recognises the recycling we do, it communicates to the public that we care about the environment and aim to reduce the impact with regards to waste.”
