A YOUNG dad who led police on a high-speed chase along a town centre street has been jailed.

George Mitchell was arrested after a pursuit in Elizabeth Street, Corby, on March 16, which ended with him crashing into a wall.

Police wanted to speak to Mitchell, 22, of Tavern Walk, Corby, as they suspected he had been drinking.

At Corby Magistrates Court yesterday he admitted failing to provide a breath specimen.

Sally Laundon, prosecuting, told the court Mitchell was driving along Cottingham Road when he was pulled over. The court heard he had been out drinking but had not intended to drive home.

He stopped initially, but then sped off and turned onto Elizabeth Street, going the wrong way around a roundabout and driving the wrong way back up the road. He made off on foot after the accident and was arrested after a brief chase.

Andy Hopkinson, in mitigation, asked for a pre-sentence report as Mitchell needed to transport his one-year-old daughter to hospital for ongoing treatment.

Chairman of the bench Roger Fowles said: “We feel there are significant aggravating factors and we see no reason for suspending the sentence.”

Mitchell was jailed for eight weeks and banned from driving for 24 months.
