Wellingborough shoppers are being invited to discover the ‘hidden gems’ of the town centre’s shops as part of a new campaign to ‘shop local’.
Launched by the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), a scheme bringing together retailers to encourage town centre trade, the promotion will see 25 shops offering special deals during the month-long initiative, which started on Saturday.
A hidden gems map has also been produced to guide shoppers to the traders, which have been chosen or nominated as unique businesses. Posters have been put up around the town in the shop windows of those taking part.
Each week a prize of £150 to spend in Hidden Gem shops will be up for grabs to successful ‘Gem Hunters’. The free competition involves simply filling in a card at a participating shop, with names being drawn out of a hat.
John Cable, Wellingborough BID Manager, said: “There’s more to Wellingborough than meets the eye and that’s what we are going to demonstrate during this campaign to shop local.
“There are some fabulous, quirky and unique goods on sale in our town centre and we feel it’s time to start celebrating them. We must also remember the major advantage of free parking we have in the town centre as well.
“With the advent of internet shopping and lots of stories in the news about high street shops closing, we need to support our traders and take action before it’s too late. So, shop local and discover Wellingborough’s Hidden Gems.”
The campaign began with ‘Heart Angels’ handing out heart-shaped chocolates and gem maps in the town centre on Saturday. It will be advertised on outdoor billboards and 40,000 leaflets containing the map will be sent to Wellingborough households.
A social media campaign will also be launched on Facebook, just search for ‘Discover Wellingborough’.
The scheme is under the banner of the BID’s ‘Discover Wellingborough’ brand, which provides an online retail directory (www.discoverwellingborough.co.uk).
