A MAN set fire to himself after years of suffering from severe depression.
Deputy Coroner Rodney Haig heard evidence about the death of Anthony Cleaver, 72, at an inquest in Kettering.
Mr Cleaver had been living at Gabriel Court in Broadway, Kettering, since May last year after spending four years at St Matthew’s Hospital in Northampton.
He had suffered from depression since just before he retired aged 64, his daughter Maxine Cleaver told the court.
She said he had ended up being sectioned and was in hospital for an extended period.
After an improvement, he was moved to Gabriel Court where he was said to be much happier.
But on October 8 last year, he went into a garage which had accidentally been left unlocked by a workman and found petrol which he poured on himself before setting light to it.
The fire brigade was called and Mr Cleaver was taken to hospital but he died. The corner’s verdict was that Mr Cleaver killed himself.
