Day of sports in Wellingborough ahead of Olympic torch visit

People can get ready for the Olympic torch visit with a free day of sports in Wellingborough on Sunday (July 1).

Wellingborough Council is hosting a free day of sports at the Redwell Leisure Centre between 11am and 4pm.

Sports on offer will include athletics, basketball, hockey, judo, boxing, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, fencing and more.

The council’s sports development officer Quintin Allen said: “This will be a great family day out. It’s a chance for people to freshen up their skills or try something completely new, and have a go at being an Olympic competitor for the day. With such a wide range of sports available there will be something for everyone, and best of all it’s completely free.

“We did something similar last year and it was really successful with a fantastic atmosphere. This year it’s going to be even more special as people get ready to welcome the torch to the borough the next day and of course we’re also only a few weeks away from the opening ceremony of the Games themselves.”

As well as the sports on offer, the family event will also feature a bouncy castle, face painting and refreshments courtesy of the Crazy Hats Breast Cancer Appeal.

The event is free and there is no need to book in advance.

The Olympic Torch will be carried through Wellingborough and Isham by 11 torchbearers on the morning of Monday, July 2.
