Police and Crime Commissioner Adam Simmonds has issued a video message to online commentators critical of his position and policies.
Mr Simmonds had challenged his anonymous critics to meet with him face to face in a meeting at the Telegraph’s sister paper the Chronicle & Echo in Northamton.
But he announced this afternoon that he would not be taking part in the debate.
He outlined the reasons why he had withdrawn from the meeting in the video message.
In a statement, Mr Simmonds said: “I wanted to talk to all the people of Northamptonshire, not just a handful of people who have chosen to remain anonymous and some appear to be involved with a group of people who use gross obscenities as part of their campaign against me.
“I thought about it over the weekend and decided to take this course of action and record a video to speak to everyone.
“I have made every effort to convey the facts and this handful of people ignore the facts with their own prejudices.”
