Police are understood to have been searching for a knife in a Northampton street this morning following an alleged stabbing in the early hours.

Officers and medics were called to St James Park Road in St James at about 3am after neighbours found a man, believed to be aged about 19, in the street.

Witnesses said he was bleeding and appeared to have a chest injury.

Officers held clothing over the wound, witnesses said, until the first medics arrived and he was later taken to hospital.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “There were a group of young people messing around in the street making a lot of noise before it happened.

“My partner called the ambulance as we could see something serious had happened; he was just lying in the street.

“He was in a lot of pain when the police officers were helping him.”

It is understood a police dog team were looking for a knife when they cordoned the road off near Ambush Street this morning.

The road has now reopened.

Police have confirmed that the man has been taken to hospital with a knife wound and that officers were called to the scene near Parkwood Street shortly after 3am following reports of a fight.

The 19-year-old has serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Another 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in police custody this morning.

Officers investigating the incident are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them. It is believed a large number of people were in the area at the time of the incident.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
