Police advice after East Northamptonshire burglaries

Police are reminding people to take simple precautions to reduce the risk of being burgled, particularly when leaving their homes empty.

The reminder follows reports of burglaries in a number of East Northamptonshire villages in recent days.

These include Laxton, Harringworth, Woodford, Bulwick and Cotterstock.

The advice is as follows:

O Leave a light on or use a timer switch to turn on lights so that your house looks occupied if you are out after dark.

O Keep front and back doors locked at all times.

O If you open windows, make sure they are closed before you go out or leave the room.

O Keep keys and other valuables out of sight and reach from cat flaps, letterboxes and downstairs doors and windows.

O Don’t forget garages, sheds and outbuildings – make sure they’re locked and secure too.

O Make sure your home is visible from the street by keeping bushes and fences low at the front, and use dusk to dawn lighting to light up the property after dark.

O When investing in new doors and windows, check they meet the relevant security standards.
