Two men who threatened a shop assistant with a meat cleaver during a ‘terrifying’ raid have been jailed for a total of almost 10 years.
Brothers Matthew, 32, and Lee Quinton, 36, were handed five-and-a-half-year and four-year sentences on Tuesday for the raid on the One Stop Shop in Northampton Road, Wellingborough, on January 29.
Northampton Crown Court was told the duo caused damage costing £2,000 to the store, which they smashed up during the robbery, in which they stole alcohol and toy teddy bears.
They were arrested on the same evening by police. One was caught drinking the stolen alcohol.
Their defence barrister Lynsey Knott said they had carried out the raid after drinking. Both men pleaded guilty to robbery in court on Tuesday.
Sentencing the pair, Judge Richard Bray said: “This was a very serious robbery and it must have been absolutely terrifying for the shop assistant.”
Speaking to Matthew, he added: “You entered the shop armed with a cleaver and smashed the till and door, enabling your co-defendant to steal the items.”
The court was told both Wellingborough men had extensive criminal records. Matthew Quinton, of Princess Way, has 76 previous convictions and Lee Quinton, of Wood Street, has 48 convictions.
