A robber who broke into a wellingborough home and threatened the owner with a large knife has received an eight-year jail sentence.

Gareth Drage, aged 34, forced his way into a house in Strode Road in Wellingborough in the early hours of July 17 this year.

Northampton Crown Court heard that Drage had a large ‘butcher’s block’ style knife and stole cash from the occupant who was in bed.

The court heard that Drage had also broken into two properties in Knox Road and another in Strode Road on the same night.

Michael Coley, prosecuting, said one of the homeowners heard Drage breaking in and told him to leave or he would call the police.

Drage responded by saying ‘If you call the police, I will kill you.”

Judge Michael Fowler said the use of the knife to threaten the homeowners made it an “appalling” crime.

He said: “The victims of this offence have been left very disturbed and one has even contemplated moving.”

Drage was jailed for given an eight year sentence for the robbery and a six-year sentence for the attempted burglary, to be served concurrently.

He is likely to serve four years in jail before being released on licence.
