A karate instructor from Northamptonshire who admitted child sex attack charges has been sentenced to more than three-and-a-half years in prison.

Kevin Reade, 63, of Irthlingborough Road, Wellingborough, appeared at Northampton Crown Court yesterday charged with three counts of sexual assault and one charge of gross indecency.

You have been unable in my view to adequately understand or appreciate the degree of harm you have caused.

Judge Timothy Smith

The offences took place a number of years ago, the court heard. However the crimes only came to light when they were reported them to police in October last year.

The court heard yesterday how Reade gave a ‘full and frank admission’ to the charges when interviewed by police in October.

Sentencing him, Judge Timothy Smith said despite admitting the crimes, Reade had failed to display a ‘sense of guilt’ for them.

“You have been unable in my view to adequately understand or appreciate the degree of harm you have caused.

“It is only said now that you are arguably developing some sense of guilt for your conduct.”

Defending for Reade, Andrew Howarth said Reade’s wife of more than 40 years filed for divorce after the charges came to light. He had also become estranged from his children.

In mitigation for the 63-year-old Mr Howarth said: “In every other aspect of his life, he has led a blameless existence. He had a happy and successful marriage for more than 30 years.”
