A Twitter troll has been arrested after he allegedly posted racist messages to two Northampton Town footballers on the social media site.

The 25-year-old, from Cheltenham, was held by police yesterday evening (Wednesday, May 8). The Cobblers beat Cheltenham Town last weekend to secure their place in the League Two play-off final.

Defender Clarke Carlisle – who is also the chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association – and striker Adebayo Akinfenwa were the targets of the alleged abuse.

Gloucestershire Police tweeted at just after 11pm last night that one arrest had been made, adding the hashtag #OneNil. The force is liaising with Northamptonshire Police in investigating the alleged abuse.
