Creative villagers to put the bunting out

More than 150m of bunting is being crafted by villagers to help add plenty of colour to their Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Wilbarston residents have been getting together to plan a street party for Sunday, June 3, to take place in Church Street, and for decoration they decided to go down the home-made route.

Rosalind Willats, of Barlow’s Lane, said: “We have been meeting once a month and we have all been contributing different things.

“About six or seven of us cut up fabric to make the bunting. It was lovely. Why spend money on it? It’s much nicer doing it together than buying it off the internet.”

Other celebrations will be the planting of a commemorative mulberry tree in the churchyard and a coronation memorabilia exhibition in the church.

Some of the village bellringers hope to join in the ringing of the bells of every church along the 65 miles of the River Welland’s valley.

Mrs Willats said: “We are planning a weekend which will be enjoyed by everyone, with villagers getting together to celebrate and have a happy time together.”
