Stanwick has been named best large village and Mawsley the best newcomer in this year’s Northamptonshire Best Village Competition.
Helmdon in South Northamptonshire pipped Stanwick to the title of overall best village at the awards ceremony at the Hunsbury Hill Centre this week.
The competition celebrates community spirit and the quality of life in the county’s villages.
Great Cransley was highly commended in the small villages category. Mawsley was highly commended in the large villages category.
The competition is run entirely by volunteers and is based at Northamptonshire Acre.
The competition looks at all aspects of village life.
It takes into account community and social activities, local businesses, sustainability, the provision for the younger and more senior residents as well as tidiness and the welcome visitors receive.
The competition, now in the fifth year of its current format, was saved in 2010 by the sponsorship of Hollowells Funeral Plans. Annette and Paul Hollowell presented the awards.
