Northamptonshire Sport is looking for individuals or groups to train up as jog leaders and become part of its growing jogging initiative – Jog Northants & Run England.
If you want to get your friends running, would like to train a group for a 10K or just want to share your knowledge and passion with others then you can take part in the one-day Leadership in Running Fitness Course on Saturday, November 24, at Redwell Leisure Centre, Wellingborough.
The session will qualify you to take your own jogging group, when you want, at a time and day which suits you, targeting who you want.
Zoe Gidley joined a Jog Northants group in 2011 as a complete beginner and recently became trained as a jog leader.
She said: “My running began after joining Sue Whitling in September 2011, who was a jog leader for the ‘Jog On Girls’ group in Crick.
“At first when they suggested I join in with the running groups I was convinced that “I don’t do running” which has been repeated back to me on numerous occasions since.
“I was convinced that I was too big and not built to run – short and stumpy is how I would normally have described myself then.
“Within a few weeks I was hooked and after Petra, another leader, got me to my first 5K without stopping – there was literally no stopping me.
“I entered my first race that December, a 10K at Stanwick Lakes.
“The following March I entered my first half marathon and ran it for the charity DeBRA.
“By this time I had lost over two stone in weight and my shape had changed quite dramatically.
“Sue asked me if I wanted to become a leader to give her “an extra pair of legs”.
“I am now enjoying taking out groups of ladies on Monday and Wednesday mornings.
“I particularly enjoy working with people who haven’t run since school and getting them to their first mile, then their first 5K and watching their confidence slowly build with every goal that they reach.”
Anyone interested can attend the one-day UKA-accredited Leadership in Running Fitness course on November 24 at Redwell Leisure Centre, Wellingborough.
The course focuses on barriers to running, how to plan a session and warm-up and cool down ideas.
It will enable you to deliver fun and safe sessions to multi-ability groups.
Once the course has been completed, you will be supported by Northamptonshire Sport in setting up your own group or assisting with a current group.
You will be provided with paperwork, on-going advice, publicity support and visits.
