County charities support Carers Week

Age UK Northamptonshire and Northamptonshire Carers are offering people the chance to look around a centre which offers support to county carers, giving them a much needed break from their caring role.

Carers Week highlights the vital contribution made by carers to their families and communities in providing unpaid care for someone who is ill, frail or disabled.

Prepared to Care? – the 2013 Carers Week campaign – will focus on how the UK’s current carer population is coping, how effectively the Government is supporting the growing numbers of carers, and whether the wider population is prepared for future caring responsibilities.

Age UK Northamptonshire care manager Jillian Powell said: “We would like to invite carers to meet Age UK Northamptonshire & Northamptonshire Carers staff during Carers Week to chat with us and have the opportunity to have a look around the facilities and discuss your options.

“If you are caring for a loved one, you need to be sure that all their needs and requirements are being catered for when you are not around.”

This year’s Carers Week is supported by many celebrities with caring experience, including actress Lynda Bellingham.

She said: “Carers Week is a fantastic opportunity for the UK to come together to recognise the outstanding contribution that carers across the country make on a day to day basis.

“My sister and I cared for our mother when she had Alzheimer’s and so I know first-hand the impact that caring can have on someone’s life.

“That’s why I’m supporting Carers Week because I believe it’s vital that help is made available, especially when you consider that every day 6,000 new people will take on a caring role for a loved one.

“Carers in this country do a fantastic job and we must come together to support them.”

Carers Week is organised by various national charities – Age UK, Carers Trust, Carers UK, Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, MS Society, Parkinson’s UK and supported by the Stroke Association and Bupa’s Carewell.

This year’s campaign has been sponsored by Sainsbury’s Plc and the sector skills council in England Skills for Care.
