Winds of up to 50mph and driving rain battered county residents on the first working day of the new year.

The county was buffeted by strong winds in the morning, which continued over the course of the day along with heavy outbreaks of rain.

It left shoppers diving for cover, including this well wrapped-up pair pictured in Wellingborough town centre.

In other incidents, a tree fell onto a car in Kettering and a tree was reported as being in danger of falling in Pipewell Road, Desborough. Both were reported to Northamptonshire County Council’s street doctor.

Meteorologists at Pitsford Hall Weather Station are predicting that conditions will improve in the coming days, but some high winds will remain.

Today is expected to be fine but still quite windy, while tomorrow is expected to start wet and windy but turn brighter and calmer in the afternoon.

The station says the worst of the conditions are in the north of England, with gusts of up to 100mph.
