Council concerned over prison job losses

Wellingborough Council has expressed concern about potential job losses following the announcement that Wellingborough Prison is set to close.

Council leader Cllr Paul Bell said: “I am disappointed that this decision has been taken without consultation and I have concerns about the effect the closure of the prison will have on our local economy. We believe a lot of jobs will be transferred out of our borough or affected in some way. As well as directly-employed staff there are local suppliers and businesses that work for the prison who will obviously find the closure difficult. You can’t lose such a major employer from a place and expect there to be no knock-on effect.

“I would also hope that both the council and the Wellingborough MP would be closely consulted about the future use of the prison building or the land.”

Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke announced the closure of the Category C prison earlier today. The closure is expected to take place by the end of the year.
