County councillors have approved a report which recommends selling off the land of a Traveller site.
The council cabinet agreed in principle in July last year to the “disposal” of the land in Irchester, pending a consultation with plot holders, the police, Wellingborough Council and the Countywide Traveller Unit.
Council officials have considered a range of options with regard to who should manage the 25-plot site, just off Gipsy Lane.
The report indicated that any move towards closing the site would be “fraught with complications”.
Although the site is valued at about £200,000, the report recognised the amount of investment required there meant the council would not be able to raise anywhere near that much by selling the land.
Cllr Andrew Langley, cabinet member for local government shared services, told councillors on Tuesday, November 13, that the council had “a clear duty of care to adequately maintain the site”.
But he added that the council did “not have particular expertise” in how best to do so.
