Corby pupils show the competition a clean set of heels

Pupils from a Corby school are celebrating after putting in a great performance in a sports event.

Lodge Park Academy finished in second place at a sports event attended by Denise Lewis, Gabby Logan and former Scotland rugby international, Kenny Logan.

The David Ross Education Trust’s (DRET) Summer Cup, sees students from across DRET’s network of more than 30 academies compete in a series of events including athletics, swimming, hockey, boccia and table tennis at the Grantham Meres Sports Stadium.

Corby’s Rockingham Primary School and Kettering’s Greenfields Primary School also competed at the event.

Olympic Gold medallist, Denise Lewis, commented: “I am so honoured to be part of this inspiring event. Being exposed to sport at a young age is so important and I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I had not been involved in sporting activities.

She added: “What’s great about the Summer Cup is that by bringing these academies together they have the opportunity to experience a high level of competition.”

As well as meeting the Olympic champion, pupils also had the opportunity to be interviewed by former gymnast and renowned TV presenter, Gabby Logan.

Lodge Park Academy gained enough points overall to finish second in the competition.

Principal Alison Hayes said: “I am incredibly proud of our students. The result is testament of the hard work and dedication of our young athletes. Our enrichment programme just keeps growing year on year and it is clearly having a very positive effect on our students.

“Finishing in second place is a fantastic achievement in what was a truly inspirational event.”

David Ross said: “Events like this are really important as they bring us together and showcase the high level of talent and potential we have in our network. I am very proud of each and every one of the students that took part.”
