A Corby man has told of his delight after he received a personal card of congratulations from Star Wars director J J Abrams for his guitars based on the blockbuster sci-fi films.

Tom Bingham, 68, has been making guitars out of unusual items for several years.

His videos have been a Youtube sensation, with one viewed more than 55,000 times.

And he was delighted to find out his work was appreciated by the American director – although at first he thought he was in trouble.

He said: “I received a phone call from an America lady who asked me if I was Tom Bingham, the guy who made Star Wars guitars.

“I was a little worried as I thought maybe I was in trouble with some sort of copyright infringement, and she asked me what my address was as J J Abrams wanted to contact me.

“I spent three weeks worrying if I was about to get hit with a writ for $1m or even worse, but was delighted when he sent me a card saying how much he liked my guitars.

“It’s nice to think that wealthy famous people like him take time out to write to ordinary people like myself.”

Mr Bingham says he could have made his last cigar box guitar.

He added: “Last week I finished off what I consider might be my last cigar box guitar as I’m getting on a bit.

“I now spend my time looking after my grandchildren – maybe it’s time to hang up my plectrum.”
