Two cadets from 422 (Corby) Squadron have completed their gliding scholarships and earned their silver wings.
Flight Sgt Joshua Loy and Sgt Jacob Guthrie began the course back in June, but due to airspace restrictions during the Olympics had to wait for their solo flights until last weekend (August 25/26).
They both completed all mandatory hours and exams prior to completing the course which now allows them to fly solo in the Vigilant, a powered glider.
An additional bonus for both cadets is that they have been invited back to RAF Henlow, Bedfordshire, as staff cadets, allowing them to work towards their gold wings.
The squadron’s training officer Mike Loy said; “Flying and gliding are two of the air cadets’ main priorities and whenever the opportunity arises we try to send as many cadets as possible.
“The gliding scholarship can also open the door for cadets to progress on to a flying scholarship at an RAF station which could also lead to them qualifying as pilots on the Grob Tutor, a powered aircraft.”
