Plans to create additional school places at Henry Chichele Primary School in Higham Ferrers have taken another step forward.

It is proposed to double the number of places available at the school from 210 to 420 in order to meet increased demand caused by new housing development in the area.

Cllr Matthew Golby, cabinet member for learning, skills and education, today (January 27) approved a decision to publish a statutory notice to expand the school, which marks the start of a four-week consultation period.

The proposed expansion will then go back to cabinet for further discussion in April.

Cllr Golby said: “Last September there was pressure on school places in Higham Ferrers due to a high level of demand driven by new development in the area.

“We have been able to create some additional capacity at Henry Chichele Primary School by providing a double mobile classroom, but this is a very short-term measure.

“By expanding the school building, we can provide additional permanent school places for local families, ensuring that this popular school can continue to meet the needs of the growing community.”
