Pensioner creates stink over drains

Margaret Greer inspects the overflowing drain near her home in Sandby Road

Margaret Greer inspects the overflowing drain near her home in Sandby Road

A pensioner says she is sick of trying to sort out the problems caused by leaky drains near her home.

Margaret Greer says she has contacted Anglian Water several times about problems with three drains outside her home in Sandby Road.

Mrs Greer, 80, is faced with a foul grey sludge from the offending drains on a lawn at the side of her property.

She fears it may contain raw sewage.

Mrs Greer says contractors working for Anglian Water have been to look at the drain in the past but it has not been sorted out.

Anglian Water has now pledged to send an engineer to deal with the problem and has apologised to Mrs Greer.

She said: “I’m fed up. I’m not phoning Anglian Water any more.

“They used to come three times a year but now nobody bothers.

“It has not been done for years and years.

“It has got the sewage in from over the road.

“I have been told by Anglian Water contractors they would come back, but nobody showed up.

“They are always getting clogged up. They don’t smell at the moment but they need to see to it.

“It’s not the point [if it doesn’t smell]. It is all over the grass.

“My neighbours have complained about it too but it is me who is doing all the phoning.”

An Anglian Water spokesman said: “We are aware the lady has called us and we apologise if this has been a problem for her, but we will get it sorted.

“We are sending an engineer out there this afternoon to have a look.”
