A cultural event for children is being held in Corby aimed at celebrating the language and traditions of Japan.

It is being held at the Stuart Road Community Centre, from Tuesday, August 7, until Thursday, August 9.

Children aged from eight to 11 are welcome to take part in all the sessions, or just some of the activities which are planned.

On Tuesday there will be a Japanese cooking session, from 10am until 12.30pm, when youngsters will learn about sushi and the traditional tea ceremony. From 1.30pm until 3.30pm there will be origami and kendama workshops and from 6pm to 7pm there will be a karate class.

On Wednesday the morning session will give children the chance to make a Japanese string garden, with kimono and mask-making in the afternoon.

On Thursday youngsters can make masks and kimonos from 10am until 12.30pm and take part in a costume performance and an Olympiad celebration from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

The centre is also running other summer activities, including cooking session, eco-fun and cartoon workshops and model car racing.

If you would like more information or to book sessions, which cost £2, call 01536 601667.
