Changes to bin collections in Wellingborough this winter

Letters are going out to all Wellingborough households this week about temporary changes to their bin collections.

The garden waste service will stop during the winter months, and there will also be some changes to collection days over Christmas.

Brown garden waste bins, which are collected fortnightly, will stop the week starting Tuesday, October 22, for those who put their brown bins out with their green recycling bins, and from the week of October 29 for residents who put them out with their black household waste bins.

The collections will start again mid-March.

New collection calendars explaining when the brown bin service stops and resumes for each household are being delivered to residents this week.

Household waste and recycling collections will continue as usual over the winter months, although there will be some small changes over the Christmas period.

Collections due on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day will be moved to Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and those that fall on Boxing Day and January 2 will be moved to the following day.

Crews from Wellingborough Norse, the company which carries out environmental services on behalf of the council, will be working on the Saturday of each week to make sure all collections are fitted in.

Cllr Morrall, chairman of the council’s community committee, said: “We pause the garden waste collections during the winter months to make the best possible use of our resources.

“As people know, council funding has been reduced by more than a quarter over the past three years and that’s meant we have to change the way some services are provided.

“We carefully looked at the amount of garden waste previously collected throughout the year, and decided that the service would only be provided between March and October, as that’s when residents make the greatest use of it.

“During the winter we would advise residents to take any garden waste they do have to their nearest recycling centre, or compost it at home.”

Leaflets explaining the changes are being delivered by Wellingborough Norse to every household in the borough this week.

If residents haven’t received their leaflet, or would like more information on recycling and composting, they can go to the council’s website at or call Norse on 01933 234520.

If there are any additional changes to bin collections during the winter months, for example if disruptions occur due to bad weather, information will be kept up-to-date on the council’s website.
