Northamptonshire County Council is inviting applications for an independent person for the authority’s newly formed Standards Committee.

Responsibilities will include working with committee members and officers investigating complaints about councillors and participating in local hearings.

Under the Localism Act 2011 the county council had to adopt a new code of conduct and establish a new committee to ensure the code was upheld.

The council is also looking to appoint a number of people to join its standards committee as non-voting co-opted members.

These people will undertake a different role to that of the independent person, participating in standards committee meetings and providing input into code of conduct issues.

Cllr Joan Kirkbride, deputy leader of the council, said: “Now that the council has adopted a new code of conduct, it is important that our councillors continue to maintain the highest standards of behaviour.

“The independent person will play a vital role in ensuring that this happens. The successful candidate will undertake a very rewarding and responsible role.

“Similarly, any applicants who whish to join our standards committee as non-voting co-opted members will also find themselves playing an important part in helping our councillors maintain the highest of conduct.

“We welcome applications from anyone who is interested in either position.”

For both positions, training will be provided to successful applicants.

Any offer is subject to the approval of Full Council and appointments will be for a period of four years unless otherwise determined by Full Council.
